Updating a ticket's status in Pipelines

How to make Gearset update a linked ticket's status as its pull request moves through your pipeline stages.

Written by Josh Camilleri

License requirements:
Ticket tracking in Pipelines is available on Deployment Teams and Deployment Enterprise licenses.

Gearset can update a linked ticket's status at each stage of your pipeline. For example, Gearset can move a ticket from "To do" to "In progress" when its PR reaches your Integration environment.

You don't need to update the status by hand as a post-promotion step.

How does status updating work?

  • You set a rule for each pipeline environment: the stage and the status Gearset sets.

  • Gearset updates the ticket when its PR is promoted to that environment.

  • For Jira and Azure DevOps, rules support standard and custom workflow stages.

How do I set up status updates?

  1. Open your pipeline.

  2. Click the cog icon, then select Edit pipeline details....

  3. Go to Issue tracking and select your ticket system.

  4. Add a rule for each environment. The fields for each system are below.

Jira

For each rule, select the Pipeline environment, the Jira project, and the status in Update issue status to. Then click Add.

Gearset also updates tickets when they're added to a release and promoted.

Before you set up Jira rules

  • When you create a feature, Gearset lists only Jira issues that are not in the Done status. To keep finished work visible until it is deployed, create a status such as “Done pending deployment”, and don’t set it to Done.

  • Check the transitions in your Jira workflow. If the workflow doesn’t allow a move from one status to another, Gearset can’t make that status change.

Azure DevOps

For each rule, select the Pipeline environment, the Project name, the Work item type, and the status to set. Then click Add. Project name and Work item type can be set to All.

To apply one rule to every work item type in the project, select All as the work item type. All works best when every work item type in the project shares the same statuses. The status list shows every status from any work item type, so check that your status applies to all of them.

Gearset currently supports work items in Azure DevOps Cloud organizations only.

Salesforce objects

In the Salesforce Tickets section, set up the optional status configuration. Gearset then updates the status field of a linked record when its PR is promoted to an environment.

The service user needs edit access to the status field. See Ticket system connections and permissions in Pipelines.

Linear

Gearset doesn't currently support updating Linear issue statuses. You can still link Linear issues to features and pull requests. See Using tickets in Pipelines.

5. Click Save.

Does Gearset comment on the ticket?

For Jira and Azure DevOps, yes. Gearset comments on the ticket each time its PR is promoted. The comment uses the name of the user who promoted the PR, if their linked account can access the ticket. Otherwise, the comment uses the pipeline owner's account.

Gearset doesn't currently comment on Linear issues or Salesforce records.
