Running your first comparison

Compare metadata between two environments

Written by Ryan Quinn

This guide walks you through running your first metadata comparison in Gearset. You'll start by connecting your Salesforce orgs or source control repos, then select the environments you want to compare. From there, you'll choose the metadata types you're interested in, and finally review the results. This will allow you to see exactly what's changed, when, and by whom, all in one place.

Step 1: Connect your orgs

Before you can compare anything, you'll need at least two connections set up. These can be Salesforce orgs, source control repos, or a mix of both.

You can add connections in two ways:

  • Go to My Connections in the left-hand menu, or

  • Add them directly on the Compare and deploy page

Need help with setting up connections?

Step 2: Select the orgs you want to compare

  1. Log in to Gearset and head to Compare and deploy (under Metadata deployments in the left-hand menu).

  2. Under Choose comparison source location, select Salesforce organization.

  3. Select the org you want to compare.

  4. Repeat the process for your deployment target.

Once both a source and target are selected, the Compare now button will become active.

Step 3: Select your metadata types

Once you hit Compare now, and land on the Compare and deploy page, metadata types load on demand. Just click any pending item to start retrieving it.

Comparing several things at once? Use a custom metadata filter to retrieve multiple items in one go.

Step 4: View the results of your comparison

Once you've selected your metadata item(s), you'll be able to see what changes have been made, when and by whom at a glance. Eliminating the need for manual XML diff or change tracking documents.
