Before you can run an in-place masking, you must first manually enable Gearset's data loader. Masking data in-place in Gearset is a quick and simple process:

Select the target salesforce org

  • Click on the Configure in-place masking button. This will launch a dialog box.

  • Select the target org to be used and click Configure in-place masking. The org must be owned by your username.

Select the objects to mask

Gearset will now analyse your org for objects that could be masked. The objects available for masking are shown in the table.

  • Select each object you would like to mask.

  • The search box can be used to filter the list to the objects you are looking for.

  • Once all objects you want to mask are selected, click NEXT to select fields to mask.

Select the fields to mask

The table shows all the fields available for masking.

  • At the bottom of the page the localisation can be chosen. This will be applied to all fields.

  • The search box can be used to filter the list of fields by the object name, field name or data type.

  • Select all fields that you would like to mask.

  • The masking can be customised for some fields. Ensure the masking type is correct, for all fields you would like to mask. Sample output can be seen in the right hand column, based on the masking type and localisation chosen.

  • Once the fields you would like to mask have been chosen and configured, click NEXT.

Disable validation validation rules, triggers and flows

The table shows all validation rules, duplicate rules, triggers and flows that can be disabled whilst the in-place masking is running.

  • Select all of these you would like to disable. By disabling these, errors can be prevented.

  • By clicking Start deactivation deployment, the metadata deployment will start. When it is complete click on Pre-deployment summary.

  • The deactivation deployment can be reversed by clicking on Rollback deactivation deployments on the following page.

Start the in-place masking

  • You'll be able to see the object records to be deployed, the actions Gearset will take to retrieve the records, such as fetching, masking and updating, as well as the field count.

  • Click on DEPLOY DATA to mask the selected data in the target org. When the in-place masking is running, each stage will mark as completed and show you how many records have been processed in each step.

  • Once complete, you'll have your subset of data available for any testing and debugging you'd like to perform on the target org.

  • The in-place masking will be stored in your data deployment history in the app. From here, you can view previous data deployments, their status, and view the details of which records were moved. Learn more about data deployment history here.

  • If you disabled any rules, this can be reversed by clicking on Rollback deactivation deployments at the bottom of the page.
